The red dust of Mars still clung to Deagan’s boots, a phantom weight against the metallic floor of the *Odyssey*. He ran a gloved hand over the cool, smooth surface of the console, the familiar hum of the ship a stark contrast to the unsettling quiet that had descended upon him days ago. Earth. The word itself was a distant echo, a pale blue marble he’d left behind for the stark, unforgiving beauty of the red planet. He’d trained for this, for years. Every simulation, every grueling test, had been geared towards this moment – the triumphant landing, the scientific exploration, the quiet satisfaction of pushing humanity’s boundaries.

Then came the chill. Not the biting cold of space, but an internal frost that seeped into his very bones, a premonition that had nothing to do with atmospheric pressure or faulty life support. It had been accompanied by a voice, not heard through his comms, but resonating within the hollow chambers of his mind. *Mercury.* The word had been a command, a summons that bypassed all logic, all protocol. And he, Deagan, the seasoned astronaut, the man of science and reason, had accepted.

He’d spoken to Eva, of course. Her voice, usually a steady anchor in the vastness of space, had been laced with disbelief, then concern. “Deagan, are you sure about this? Mission parameters are clear. You’re on Mars. This… Mercury detour… it’s unprecedented. Is there a malfunction? A system alert I’m missing?”
