The silence of the red planet, once a comforting blanket, had begun to press in, a heavy, suffocating shroud. Then, the chill. It hadn't been the kind of cold that seeped into your bones from a malfunctioning environmental suit; this was an internal frost, a primal shiver that had no earthly explanation. It had been accompanied by the voice, or rather, the *presence*, a silent, insistent command echoing not in his ears, but deep within his very being: *Mercury*.

He’d accepted. Of course, he’d accepted. What choice did he truly have? The Mars mission, the pinnacle of his career, now felt like a distant dream, a prelude to something far grander, and infinitely more terrifying. Commander Eva Rostova’s clipped, concerned voice had crackled through his comms, a lifeline to the familiar world he was so rapidly leaving behind. “Deagan, report. He’d offered a clipped, unconvincing reassurance, avoiding the truth that his own internal compass had been irrevocably reoriented.
