Chapter 13
Latent Abilities
Deagan starts to feel new senses awakening. He can perceive the Collective's thoughts more clearly, his own mind adapting to their telepathic influence. His purpose deepens.
The chill had never truly left. Not the biting, physical cold of a Martian night, but a deeper, more pervasive sensation, like a phantom limb that still remembered the frost. Deagan had dismissed it as residual stress, the lingering echo of a mission accomplished but still demanding. Yet, as he floated in the sterile confines of the transit vessel, the crimson dust of Mars a receding memory, the sensation intensified, morphing into something akin to… awareness.
It was as if a new layer of reality had been peeled back, revealing a subtle hum beneath the familiar silence of space. He could hear the faintest whisper of a failing system, feel the minute vibrations that signaled a course correction. But this was different. This was a nascent symphony of thought, a whisper that resonated not in his ears, but in the very marrow of his bones.
He closed his eyes, trying to anchor himself to the tangible. The cool metal of the control panel beneath his fingertips. The steady rhythm of his own breath. Yet, the whispers persisted, coalescing, becoming clearer. They weren’t words, not in the way he understood them. They were impressions, emotions, a vast, ancient tapestry of consciousness unfurling within his mind. He felt a profound sense of age, of immense patience, and a growing urgency that mirrored the phantom chill.
