The air, recycled and sterile, hummed with a familiar drone, yet it felt alien to Deagan now. Mars was a memory, a red smudge receding in his viewport, replaced by the stark, unforgiving canvas of space. He was a creature of transit, a solitary speck navigating the infinite, and the silence in his small craft was a heavy blanket, stifling. The chill, the one that had stolen into his bones on Mars, had been the harbinger, the first tremor of a seismic shift in his reality. It had felt like a phantom limb ache, a deep, internal cold that no suit heater could banish. Then came the voice, not through his comms, but *within* him, a whisper that resonated in the marrow of his being, directing him, compelling him. Mercury.

He’d argued, of course, with the ghost of a voice that seemed to emanate from the very fabric of his thoughts. Commander Rostova, her voice a crisp, concerned static from Earth, had been baffled, then alarmed. Mission parameters were not to be altered on a whim, even for a seasoned astronaut whose Mars landing had been hailed as humanity’s greatest leap. But Deagan had felt a pull, an undeniable imperative that transcended duty and protocol. He had simply transmitted his decision, a curt declaration that had undoubtedly sent ripples of confusion and anger through Mission Control. Now, the silence was his only companion, broken only by the rhythmic pulse of the ship’s life support.

The Mercury Collective, as he’d come to understand them, were not a physical entity in the way he understood life. Their communication was a symphony of impressions, of images and emotions woven into a tapestry of thought. They had shown him, not with words, but with a cascade of sensory data, the nature of the threat. It wasn’t a meteor shower, or a rogue star, or any of the quantifiable dangers Earth’s scientists meticulously cataloged. It was… subtler. Pervasive. A slow corruption, seeping through the cosmic currents, a disharmony that threatened to unravel the very threads of existence.
