The sterile hum of Mission Control was a familiar lullaby to Commander Eva Rostova, a symphony of blinking lights and hushed voices that usually soothed her. But tonight, the melody was discordant, a jarring clash of uncertainty that grated against her nerves. Deagan. The name echoed in the vast control room, a phantom presence now, a ghost in the meticulously charted telemetry. Three days. Three days since he’d landed on Mars, a feat that had sent ripples of triumph across the globe. Three days since he’d gone silent, not in the way of a malfunctioning comms system, but in a way that spoke of a deliberate, inexplicable departure.

“Anything, Jian?” Eva’s voice, usually crisp and authoritative, held a tremor she couldn’t quite suppress. The telemetry shows a course correction initiated twenty-four hours ago, heading directly for Mercury. No prior warning, no request for deviation, nothing.” He gestured at a secondary screen, a cascade of data points that painted a picture of utter bewilderment. “His power readings are stable, life support nominal. He’s not in distress, at least not according to the instruments.”
