The safe house was silent, a tomb of polished emptiness. Anya Sharma stood in the center of the sparsely furnished room, the scent of lemon polish and old paper clinging to the air. It was the only residue left of the man they called Ghost, a phantom who had dissolved into the ether, leaving behind a void where a life should have been. Her fingers traced the cool, smooth surface of the table, the same table where Ghost had once sat, meticulously planning his every move, every escape. Now, it was just a table.

She had spent days here, sifting through the meticulous erasure. No fingerprints beyond the cursory ones of the handler who had placed him here. No stray hairs, no forgotten receipts, no digital breadcrumbs. It was as if he had been a ghost in the truest sense, a specter who had occupied a space without truly *being* in it. Yet, Anya knew better. The meticulousness itself was a clue, a scream in the silence. No one erased their existence so thoroughly unless they had something profound to hide, or something profound to protect.

Small, tarnished, its surface worn smooth by countless touches. Inside, two faded images: a woman with kind eyes, a child with an innocent smile. A family? A memory? A reason?
