The crisp mountain air, once a balm to Elias’s weary soul, now seemed to carry a thousand whispers, each one a ghost from a life long buried. Lyra, with her sun-kissed hair and eyes that held the boundless blue of a summer sky, was a persistent ripple in the placid, yet stagnant, pool of his solitude. Today, as they rested by a gurgling stream, its waters tumbling over moss-slicked stones, her laughter, bright and unburdened, snagged on something deep within him. It was a sound so achingly familiar, so utterly out of place in his present, that it sent a jolt through his chest.
He watched her trace the delicate veins of a fallen leaf with a slender finger, her brow furrowed in gentle contemplation. “Isn’t it beautiful, Elias?” she’d asked, her voice soft. “Even in decay, there’s such… intricate design.”
Elias had merely grunted, his gaze fixed on the distant, jagged peaks that clawed at the horizon. Beauty was a concept that had long since faded from his world, replaced by the stark, unforgiving reality of survival. Yet, Lyra’s simple observation, her ability to find grace in the ephemeral, stirred a faint, almost imperceptible ache. It was like a forgotten melody, a tune he’d once known by heart, now reduced to a few discordant notes.
