The crackle of the campfire was a familiar companion, a murmur against the vast silence of the wilderness. Elias Thorne, hunched over the flames, watched the embers dance, each spark a fleeting memory he couldn't quite grasp. He’d grown accustomed to this quiet ache, a dull throb beneath the surface of his days. The cabin, his fortress against the world, had also become his cage. The letter, a fragile whisper from a forgotten past, had finally nudged him out, a reluctant adventurer drawn by the faintest scent of something he desperately needed but couldn't name.

Then, she arrived. Lyra Meadowlight. She was like a sudden burst of sunshine on a perpetually overcast day. Her boots crunched on the dry leaves, a sound so full of life it startled him. She emerged from the trees, a splash of colour against the muted greens and browns of the forest, her backpack a cheerful explosion of mismatched straps and patches. Her eyes, wide and bright as a summer sky, met his, and a genuine, unburdened smile bloomed on her face.

“Hello there!” she chirped, her voice a clear, bell-like sound that seemed to chase away the shadows clinging to Elias. “Didn’t expect to see anyone else out this far. Mind if I share your fire for a bit? My own’s still a bit shy.”
