They spoke little on this return. The grand revelations of the hidden cache, the faded letters, the photograph of Eleanor’s radiant smile – these had been spoken aloud, explored, and laid bare under the vast, indifferent sky. Now, a different kind of conversation was happening, a silent communion between Elias and himself, and between Elias and the world he had so long shut out. He noticed the delicate, almost imperceptible blush of moss on the north side of ancient oaks, the intricate lacework of spiderwebs spun between dew-kissed ferns, the way sunlight fractured through the canopy, painting shifting mosaics on the forest floor. These were details he had overlooked for so long, blinded by his internal storm. Now, they were balm.
