The old woman’s eyes, rheumy and clouded like a winter sky, fixed on mine with an unnerving intensity. She’d been sweeping the same patch of cracked sidewalk outside the tiny convenience store for what felt like an eternity, her broom a slow, deliberate dance against the concrete. I’d stopped for a bottle of water, the afternoon sun beating down with a relentless heat that had me craving coolness.
“You’re the new one,” she’d rasped, her voice like dry leaves skittering across pavement. It wasn’t a question.
I’d offered a polite smile, a little unnerved by her directness. “Yes, I just moved into the old Hawthorne place.”
