Chapter 18

Choosing a Path

The revelation of her heritage forces Leilani to make a pivotal choice. She can embrace her destiny as royalty, with all its inherent dangers and responsibilities, or she can attempt to retreat to the quiet anonymity of her former life, a life now tainted by the knowledge of what she is. The grand hall of Ashford Manor, usually a place of hushed reverence and the clinking of fine china, now buzzed with an electric tension. The air, thick with the scent of wilting roses and unspoken anxieties, clung to me like a shroud. My heritage, a tapestry woven from threads of a distant, vibrant land and the gilded cage of this kingdom, had been laid bare for all to see. The words, spoken by the King himself, still echoed in the cavernous space, each syllable a hammer blow against the fragile peace I had so desperately clung to. *“Leilani Aveline, daughter of Chief Kanoa of the Sunstone Tribe, and Prince Julian Alaric of Valmont.”*

He had seen the shimmer of my mother’s necklace, heard the echoes of her songs in my voice, perhaps even glimpsed the wild, untamed spirit that had captured his attention. Yet, to have it all confirmed, to see the maid he had secretly cherished declared a princess of a foreign land, a princess of his own realm… the realization was dawning on his face, a slow, beautiful sunrise after a long night.
