Chapter 17
The Revelation Ball
A grand royal ball is held, intended to showcase the eligible princesses for Prince Adrian. Amidst the opulence and forced gaiety, the moment arrives for Leilani's true identity to be revealed. Through a series of dramatic events, orchestrated by both allies and enemies, her lineage is brought to light. The court is thrown into a state of shock and disbelief as her connection to both a foreign prince and the royal family becomes undeniable, shattering the established social order and igniting a firestorm of speculation.
The air in the grand ballroom of Ashford Manor shimmered with an almost tangible energy. Gilded chandeliers dripped with a thousand tiny flames, casting a warm, honeyed glow upon the assembled nobility. Ladies in gowns that whispered of silk and starlight, their jewels a constellation of captured light, mingled with gentlemen whose embroidered coats spoke of lineage and importance. It was the Duke’s grand Revelation Ball, a spectacle designed to present the eligible princesses of the neighboring kingdoms to Crown Prince Adrian, and a prelude to his own royal wedding, should he deign to choose a bride from the glittering array.
I, of course, was not among them. My place was in the shadows, a ghost in the tapestry of their revelry, ensuring that their wine glasses never ran dry, their needs were met before they were even voiced. He had looked at me then, his eyes wide with a dawning wonder that mirrored my own burgeoning confusion. “This… this is the mark of the Sunstone Tribe,” he had whispered, his voice raspy with disbelief. “The very same tribe that…” He had trailed off, his gaze fixed on my face, as if seeing me for the first time, truly seeing me.
Now, as I moved through the periphery of the ballroom, my heart thrummed a nervous rhythm against my ribs. The Duke and Duchess Ashford, ever the picture of courtly grace, moved through the throng, their smiles fixed, their eyes sharp. I saw them greet Prince Adrian, who, for all his usual roguish charm, seemed subdued tonight. He was surrounded by a gaggle of simpering princesses, their laughter like tinkling bells, their every gesture designed to capture his attention. Yet, his gaze flickered, stealing glances towards the servants’ entrance, a subtle, almost imperceptible shift that sent a jolt through me. Was he looking for me? The thought was absurd, yet it bloomed, foolish and defiant, in the fertile ground of my burgeoning emotions.
