The strange, wobbly stick lay nestled in Cole’s palm, its surface shimmering with colors that seemed to shift and swirl even in the dim light of the attic. Colin, her nose practically touching the artifact, traced a spiral pattern with her finger. “It’s like a rainbow exploded inside it,” she breathed, her eyes wide with fascination. Cole nodded, a thrill of wonder mixed with a prickle of unease dancing in his chest. He felt a strange warmth radiating from the stick, a gentle hum that vibrated through his fingers and up his arm.

Suddenly, the colors within Colton intensified, swirling into a vortex of emerald green and sapphire blue. A soft, melodic voice, like the chime of tiny bells, echoed not from the stick itself, but from within Cole’s mind. *“You… you can hear me?”*

Cole’s eyes widened, and he glanced at Colin, who was still lost in her artistic appraisal. “Did you hear that?” he whispered, his voice barely audible.

Colin finally looked up, a slight frown creasing her brow. “Hear what, Cole? The wind?”

*“Not the wind,”* the voice chimed again, this time a little clearer, a little more insistent. *“Me. The stick.”*

Colin’s jaw dropped. Her gaze snapped to the object in Cole’s hand, then back to her brother’s astonished face. “You mean… it talked?”

Cole gulped. “I think so. It’s… in my head.” He concentrated, trying to focus on the strange presence. *“Who are you?”* he thought, directing his question to Colton.

The colors pulsed, a gentle wave of lavender washing over them. *“My name is Colton,”* the voice replied, a touch of sadness coloring its tone. *“And I am… not from here.”*

Colin scrambled closer, her earlier mischief forgotten, replaced by a genuine, earnest curiosity. “Not from here? Where are you from, Colton?”

*“A world… far away,”* Colton explained, the colors in its surface shifting to deep, starry purples and shimmering silvers. *“A place where art is not just seen, but lived. Where colors sing and shapes dance. It is… it is my home.”*

Cole felt a pang of sympathy for the little stick. It sounded beautiful, but also impossibly distant. “You’re lost?” he asked, his protective instincts kicking in.

A sigh, like the rustle of dry leaves, seemed to emanate from Colton. *“Yes, lost. I was… exploring. A shimmer, a pull, and then… here. I cannot find my way back.”* The colors dimmed slightly, a faint melancholy seeping into their glow. *“I miss it. I miss the music of the aurora, the taste of starlight, the feel of the dream-weavers’ threads…”*

Colin’s eyes welled up. “Oh, Colton!” she exclaimed, reaching out a tentative finger to stroke its smooth surface. “That sounds so sad! We have to help you get home!”

Cole looked at his sister, then back at Colton. The thought of a creature from another world, lost and alone, tugged at his heart. He remembered the stories he’d read, tales of heroes embarking on grand quests. This felt like the beginning of one. “She’s right, Colton,” Cole said, his voice firm, though a tiny tremor of apprehension still lurked beneath. “We’ll help you. We’ll find a way.”

Colton’s colors brightened, a hopeful streak of gold appearing amidst the swirling hues. *“You would? You truly would?”*

“Of course!” Colin chirped, her optimism bubbling over. “We’re great adventurers! We’ll find your home, Colton, I promise!” She glanced at Cole, a determined glint in her eye. “We’ll be the best adventurers ever!”

Cole smiled, feeling a surge of resolve. “We’ll figure it out, Colton. We’ll start by trying to understand how you got here. Maybe there’s a clue, something about the way you arrived.”

*“I… I remember a shimmering doorway,”* Colton offered. *“It pulsed with light, and the air around it crackled like a summer storm. It was there, and then it was gone. I was trying to reach for it, and then…”*

“A shimmering doorway,” Cole repeated, his mind already whirring. “Like a portal?”

*“Perhaps,”* Colton replied. *“In my world, we have such things, but they are rarely seen here.”*

Colin, ever the artist, pointed to a particularly intricate swirl on Colton’s surface. “What about these patterns, Colton? They’re so strange and beautiful. Do they mean anything?”

Colton’s colors swirled, a gentle blush of rose appearing. *“They are… echoes,”* he explained. *“Fragments of the places I have seen. The deeper the color, the further the journey. The brighter the light, the stronger the magic.”*

Cole leaned closer, his curiosity piqued. He noticed how some of the patterns seemed to form shapes, almost like constellations, while others were delicate, filigree-like designs. “So, these aren’t just pretty colors, are they?”

*“They are a map, of sorts,”* Colton admitted. *“A map of my travels, but also… a reflection of the path I took to get here. If you can decipher them, perhaps they will show you the way back.”*

A thrill shot through Cole. A map! A real, magical map hidden within their new friend. This was more exciting than any of his books. He looked at Colin, who was already sketching furiously in a small notebook she’d pulled from her pocket, her tongue sticking out in concentration.

“We’ll study them, Colton,” Cole promised. “Every swirl, every sparkle. We’ll figure out your map.”

Colin nodded vigorously, her pencil flying across the page. “We’ll be like detectives! Detective Cole and Detective Colin, solving the mystery of the magical art stick!”

Colton’s glow intensified, a warm, golden light spreading across his surface. *“Thank you,”* his voice echoed, filled with genuine gratitude. *“You are very kind. I… I had feared I was alone.”*

Cole felt a sense of pride swell in his chest. He was protecting Colton, helping him. And Colin, usually so prone to giggles and mischief, was completely absorbed in their quest, her artistic talent now a potential key to their success. He knew this wouldn't be easy. The idea of a portal, of other worlds, was both exhilarating and a little daunting. But looking at Colton, at the hope flickering in his colors, and at Colin’s unwavering enthusiasm, Cole knew they had to try. Their adventure had truly begun. The attic, once just a dusty storage space, now felt like the starting point of something extraordinary, a secret shared between a boy, his sister, and a lost traveler from the stars.
