The city shimmered in the sun, every stone and spire forged from gold, untouched by mortal hands. Magic—that was the only thing that made sense here. Even the air tasted different, metallic and sweet, as if the light itself wanted to cling to you. Some visitors used to blink when they saw the walls the first time. Not me. I learned to keep my eyes open, never let awe get the better of me.

King Daniel ruled from his high tower, cloaked in gold and white, eyes like fire when the sun hit them just right. His crown was a thing of silver crystals, each gem glowing from some inner flame. Nobody ever questioned his fairness. He listened. He didn’t look down on anyone, not even the lowest worker polishing the gold bricks. Equality wasn’t a word here; it was the way people breathed. I watched, sharp and cold, because secrets don’t survive where everyone is honest. Not without effort.

I walked the streets, boots clicking softly over magic-smoothed gold. Banners floated overhead, spelling PEACE in letters too bright to stare at. Every window framed a little piece of paradise—gardens that never wilted, rivers of molten light weaving under bridges. The kingdom didn’t just run on magic. It was magic. But the thing about perfection is, it demands looking closer.

One morning, I stood near the palace gates, watching as King Daniel took flight—real wings, white as thunderclouds, trailing sparks that left the crowd silent. He soared over the city, eyes scanning for threats only he seemed to sense.

A girl next to me whispered, “He’s protecting us. Nothing gets past him.” Her voice shook, like she needed to tell herself it was true.

I didn’t answer. I watched, rough-voiced and silent, as the king’s shadow swept over us—bigger than any doubt, but not quite enough to smother mine.

People trusted him. If an enemy ever dared come close, the city would shine hotter than fire, and King Daniel would blaze in the sky. That’s how the stories went. But stories skip the details. Like the way his eyes lingered a moment too long on the horizon, or how the flame in the crown burned brighter some days than others.

I moved through the city, collecting glances and half-formed rumors. A merchant insisted his wares sang at midnight—magic gone wild. An old woman clutched my arm and muttered about shadows moving where sunlight should burn them away. "The king will fix it," people promised. I catalogued the cracks, small but sharp, in my mind.

Night drifted in, turning gold to a soft glow. I gazed up at the palace, where King Daniel stood on his balcony, wings folded, fire in his eyes reflecting the burning world news written in golden flames. From below, he looked invincible. I knew better. Perfection only lasts until someone asks the right question.

Was all this magic really enough to keep us safe? Or was something—someone—waiting for the right moment to show us the price of such brilliance?

The stories everyone else told always ended with peace. My story was only beginning.
