Chapter 4 — The Answer
Matthew finally commits to riding his father's wave. He presses play on the voicemail, and the Bell carries him through a disorienting journey across time and memory. He arrives in a surreal, shifting landscape where he encounters fragmented versions of a woman named Elara — manifestations connected to the Bell's deeper history. During the journey, the question he planned to ask dissolves, replaced by an unplanned one: 'Are you going to be happy?' The Bell's guidance becomes erratic as it responds to the fragments, pulling Matthew between his father's wave and Elara's unresolved signal. He begins to understand that the Bell is not only carrying him toward his father but also toward something — or someone — it has been seeking all along. Matthew wakes in the kitchen, the phone still on the table, the voicemail still unplayed, uncertain whether the journey happened in time or only in the space between heartbeats.
He pressed play.
Not with conviction. Not with the clean resolve of a man who has made his decision and stands behind it. He pressed play the way a person reaches for a light switch in a room they have been sitting in the dark for too long — not because the darkness has become unbearable but because the hand, moving on its own, has decided that enough is enough, that the waiting is its own kind of answer, and that a wrong answer given honestly is worth more than the right answer never spoken.
His thumb found the icon. The speaker crackled — that small, domestic crackle, the sound of a phone doing what a phone does, converting stored data into air pressure, turning position into sound. And then his father's voice was in the kitchen.
