Chapter 4
Embracing the Shadow
Laila accepts her curse's true power. No longer a victim, she wields her gift with chilling precision. Don Julius Gracello's heart, once strayed, now turns irrevocably towards her.
The plush velvet of the chaise lounge did little to cushion the sharp edges of Laila’s realization. The hushed whispers of the servants, the clinking of ice in Don Julius’s untouched whiskey, the very air in their opulent study felt thick with a betrayal that had nothing to do with a fleeting dalliance. It was the casualness of it that seared. A glance from his dark eyes, a murmur of agreement, a hand that lingered far too long on the arm of a woman whose name Laila had only ever heard uttered with disdain – Madison Ruiz.
In her past life, under the suffocating weight of Mateo Simons’ cruelty, Laila had been a broken doll, her spirit ground to dust. She’d endured, endured, endured, until there was nothing left to endure. She’d prayed for an escape, and in the cosmic irony of her existence, she’d been granted one, albeit a brutal one. Now, in this life, married to the formidable Don Julius Gracello, she had expected a different kind of pain, perhaps the cold indifference of a powerful man wedded for status. She hadn’t anticipated the gut-wrenching sting of infidelity.
A tremor ran through her, not of fear, but of something unfamiliar, something potent. The curse, that serpentine whisper that had always coiled in her gut, felt different tonight. It wasn’t a shield; it was a weapon waiting to be drawn. She watched Don Julius’s profile, the sharp line of his jaw, the arrogance in his posture, and a cold, calculating thought unfurled in her mind. He had wronged her. He had made a fool of her. And the curse, her curse, would not stand for it.
