The Whispering Woods
Following the clues, they venture into the Whispering Woods, a place rumored to hold ancient secrets. Strange occurrences and unsettling illusions test their resolve.
The path into the Whispering Woods was less a trail and more a suggestion, a faint parting in the undergrowth that seemed to swallow the last vestiges of daylight. Even Kael, usually so stoic, cast a wary glance at the encroaching gloom. The air here was different, heavy and thick, carrying the scent of damp earth and something else, something ancient and unsettling. It was the smell of secrets, I realized, of things that had lain undisturbed for centuries.
“Are you certain this is the way?” Kael’s voice was a low rumble, barely disturbing the unnatural quiet. His hand rested on the hilt of his sword, a familiar gesture that, even now, offered a sliver of comfort.
I consulted the brittle parchment again, its edges frayed with age. The looping script, deciphered from the tattered fragment found in my grandmother’s journal, pointed us here. “The woods themselves hold the breath of the old ones,” I murmured, tracing a symbol that resembled a coiled serpent. “The next clue lies within the heart of their slumber.”
