The air in the Whispering Woods was thick, heavy with the scent of damp earth and decay. Each rustle of leaves, each snap of a twig, felt amplified, a drumbeat against the anxious thrum in my chest. Kael walked ahead, his broad shoulders a bulwark against the encroaching shadows, his hand never far from the hilt of his sword. I followed, my gaze darting from the tangled undergrowth to the slivers of moonlight that pierced the dense canopy, searching for any sign of movement, any hint of the ambush we both knew was inevitable.

Lyra, usually so effervescent, was unnervingly quiet. She trailed behind me, her steps light, almost ethereal, her eyes wide and luminous in the gloom. She’d been our guide for the past two days, her knowledge of the ancient forest paths proving invaluable, but a seed of unease had begun to sprout within me. It started subtly, a misplaced word, a glance held too long, a suggestion that seemed too convenient. Now, in the oppressive silence of the woods, that seed was threatening to bloom into full-blown suspicion.

"Are you certain this is the quickest route, Lyra?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper, hoping it wouldn't carry too far.
