Chapter 7
The Serpent's Tongue
They meet Lyra, a charismatic woman versed in ancient lore. She offers guidance, but her charming demeanor masks an unsettling mystery, her true motives unclear.
The air in the marketplace buzzed with the frantic energy of a dying ember. Stalls, usually overflowing with vibrant silks and exotic spices, were now draped in muted linens, their owners casting furtive glances at the sky. A perpetual twilight seemed to have settled over the city, a premature dusk that clung to the cobblestones and seeped into the very marrow of my bones. It had been three days since we’d left the relative safety of the forgotten library, three days of hushed conversations and the gnawing suspicion that every shadow held a threat. Kael, ever the sentinel, walked a pace ahead, his broad shoulders a bulwark against the unseen. His hand rested, almost unconsciously, on the hilt of his sword, a constant reminder of the world we now inhabited – a world teetering on the precipice of an ancient war.
We were searching for a needle in a haystack, or rather, a whisper in a tempest. The parchment, brittle with age, offered only a single, cryptic line: "Where the river weeps for the sun, seek the serpent's tongue." The river, of course, was the Argent, its silvery waters a constant presence in the city’s lore. But "weeping for the sun"? It spoke of a place where light struggled to penetrate, a hidden recess, a shadowed cove. And the serpent’s tongue? It was a riddle wrapped in an enigma, a phrase that could mean anything from a specific plant to a coded message.
"It's here," Kael's voice, a low rumble that cut through the market’s murmur, startled me. He gestured towards a stall tucked away in a narrow alley, its entrance almost swallowed by the encroaching gloom. The vendor was a woman, her face a tapestry of wrinkles, her eyes like chips of obsidian. She wore a veil that obscured most of her features, adding another layer to the pervasive sense of unease.
