The weight of Kael’s confession settled between us like a shroud, heavier than the dust motes dancing in the single shaft of moonlight that pierced the gloom of the abandoned shrine. His voice, usually a low rumble, was strained, each word a chipped stone tumbling into a chasm. “They… they made it look like I was weak. Like I’d abandoned my post. The whispers started, then the accusations. Silas Vane himself orchestrated it.”

I traced the intricate carvings on the crumbling altar, my fingers finding the cool, smooth surface of a forgotten symbol. Vane. The name itself felt like a curse, a serpent coiled in the heart of the realm. Kael’s disgrace, the fall from grace that had turned him into the brooding shadow I’d found on the road, had been a calculated move. A pawn removed from the board before the game even truly began.

“Why?” The question was barely a breath, lost in the vast emptiness of the shrine.
