The jagged teeth of the Crystal Pass gnawed at the sky, a formidable gateway to the Aurora Peaks. Snow, whipped into a frenzy by an unseen wind, stung Elara’s cheeks as she pulled her fur-lined hood tighter. Beside her, Kael’s broad shoulders shielded her from the worst of the gale, his gaze fixed on the shimmering, crystalline formations that gave the pass its name. They pulsed with an inner light, casting long, dancing shadows that played tricks on the eye. Finn, ever the pragmatist, was hunched over a tattered scroll, his brow furrowed in concentration.
“Are you sure about this, Finn?” Elara shouted over the wind’s lament. “The old tales about the Crystal Pass aren’t exactly welcoming.”
Finn looked up, his eyes bright with a mixture of apprehension and excitement. “They speak of guardians, Elara. Not monsters, not exactly. More like… ancient spirits tied to the very rock and ice of this place. And,” he gestured to a series of intricate carvings etched into a colossal ice pillar, “these markings… they’re not random. They’re a language. An ancient one.”
