The air grew thin and crisp as they left the hushed, whispering pines behind. Before them lay a sight that stole their breath, not with beauty, but with a profound, unsettling stillness. A river, impossibly wide and perfectly, unnervingly calm, stretched across their path. Its surface was not water as they knew it, but a shimmering, opalescent sheen, like liquid moonlight captured and held still.
