The world of Aethelgard was dimming. Not just the twilight that descended with the sun’s reluctant dip below the horizon, but a deeper, more insidious dimming, as if a shroud woven from despair had been cast over the land. The vibrant greens of the mosses that clung to the ancient stones were muted, the cerulean skies bled into a dull, bruised grey, and even the laughter of children seemed to carry a hollow echo. The encroaching shadow, once a distant threat, now pressed in on all sides, its chilling presence a palpable weight that settled on the heart and whispered doubts into the mind.

Elara, Finn, and Lyra stood on a windswept ridge, the tattered banner of their quest snapping defiantly against the deepening gloom. Below them, the familiar, comforting landscape of their homeland was transforming, its once-vivid hues leaching away like color from a fading tapestry. A scattering of trees, their leaves now a sickly brown, stood like skeletal fingers reaching towards a sky that offered no solace. Even the air itself felt heavy, thick with a sorrow that had no name.

“It’s worse than I thought,” Lyra murmured, her voice barely a whisper against the keening wind. She pulled her cloak tighter, not for warmth, but as if to ward off an invisible chill that seeped into her very bones. Her usually bright eyes, so quick to find the spark of life in the smallest creature, were clouded with a shared apprehension.
