The sun, a giant, warm lollipop in the sky, beat down on the playground. I clutched the cookie in my fist, the edges already a little fuzzy from being squeezed. It wasn't just *any* cookie, mind you. This was the last one from the special bag Mom had packed, the one with the little chocolate chips that looked like tiny, happy stars. And it was for Leo. My Leo. The one with the sunshine hair and the giggle that sounded like wind chimes.

But things had gotten… complicated. Like trying to untangle a kite string after a particularly enthusiastic gust. First, there was the whole sharing thing. Mrs. Gable, with her kind smile and her even kinder voice, kept saying, "Sharing is caring, Lily-bug!" But how could I care if Leo was sharing his favorite red crayon with *someone else*? It felt like he was sharing a piece of my heart. And then, *he* showed up. Sam. The Block Tower Bandit. He could build towers that scraped the sky, and he did it with this smug little grin that made me want to poke him with a sharp stick. He kept trying to steal Leo’s attention, building things and making funny faces and generally being… there.

Yesterday, though. Yesterday was different. I’d been hiding behind the big oak tree, pretending to be a secret agent on a vital mission (which, in my defense, it was – to observe Leo without him knowing I was observing him). And I saw them. Leo and Sam, right by the sandbox. Sam had dropped his bright blue bucket, and it rolled into a puddle. I was ready to unleash a torrent of indignant shouts about how *that was Leo’s favorite bucket*, but before I could even open my mouth, Leo was there. He’d picked up the bucket, dripped it off, and then, instead of looking annoyed, he’d *laughed*. He’d actually laughed, and then he’d helped Sam dig a hole so deep I was sure they’d reach China. And Sam, the Block Tower Bandit, had looked at Leo with this… soft look. Not his usual smug grin. It was like seeing a wolf suddenly decide to knit a sweater. It was confusing. And weirdly… nice.
