Mrs. Gable's wise old eyes, the colour of well-worn denim, had seen it all. She’d witnessed the rise and fall of entire sandcastle empires, the dramatic pronouncements of impending doom over a lost teddy bear, and the sheer, unadulterated joy of a perfectly executed slide run. Today, perched on her usual bench beneath the ancient oak, she was watching a particularly fascinating drama unfold. It involved Lily, Leo, and that Sam fellow, who seemed to have an uncanny knack for appearing whenever Leo was having a particularly good time.

Lily, my darling Lily, was in her element. Or at least, she *thought* she was. Her world, which had been a perfectly constructed utopia of shared giggles and strategically placed shiny pebbles, had recently encountered a few… cracks.
