Chapter 7
Lucas's Burden
Lucas grapples with unspoken knowledge, a secret he carries that burdens his heart. His protectiveness intensifies, fueled by a growing fear that the town's past will inevitably claim their future.
The laughter, when it first truly registered, was like a melody unearthed from a forgotten crypt, rare and resonant. Lucas’s laughter. Anna had heard him chuckle before, a polite murmur that barely disturbed the air, but this was different. It spilled out of him in the shadowed alcove of the old bookstore, a place that smelled of aged paper and the ghosts of countless stories. The streetlamps outside had begun their weary vigil, casting long, wavering fingers of light that did little to dispel the encroaching dusk, and the river mist, a silken shroud, was already beginning to weave its secrets into the night. Tonight, however, the burden seemed heavier. They had walked hand-in-hand from the bookstore, the cobblestones cool beneath their feet, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and the distant, mournful cry of a foghorn. Anna had been recounting a fanciful tale she’d overheard at the market, a whisper of a lost treasure hidden somewhere along the treacherous cliffs to the north. Lucas had listened, his thumb tracing the delicate bones of her hand, but his smile, though present, didn’t quite reach his eyes.
