Chapter 6
The Town's Secret
A dark, unacknowledged history of the town begins to surface, veiled in mystery. Anna's innate curiosity draws her closer to the truth, even as it leads her into dangerous territory.
The air in the town of Oakhaven had a peculiar scent, a mixture of damp earth, woodsmoke, and something else, something indefinable and ancient, like dust disturbed after centuries of stillness. It clung to Anna’s clothes, her hair, her very skin, a constant reminder of the place she now called home. It was a town that held its breath, guarding secrets in the shadowed eaves of its cottages and the gnarled roots of its ancient oaks. Lucas, with his easy smile and eyes that held the depth of the twilight sky, seemed to be the only one who could coax the light out of its perpetual gloom.
Today, however, a different kind of shadow had fallen. It wasn’t the comforting dusk that softened the edges of their world, but a prickling unease that seemed to emanate from the very stones of the town square. Anna, usually so eager to embrace the day, found herself lingering by the window of their small cottage, watching the townsfolk move with a studied, almost furtive, rhythm. Their greetings were clipped, their glances sideways, as if each interaction was a carefully negotiated treaty.
“You seem troubled, my love,” Lucas said, his voice a low rumble that always managed to soothe the frayed edges of her spirit. He entered the room, his presence a warm tide against the chill that had settled in her heart. He carried a basket of freshly baked bread, its aroma a comforting counterpoint to the unease that permeated the air.
