Facing the World (Comically)
The blended family tries to maintain normalcy, leading to funny situations when outsiders nearly discover their secret. They learn to cover for each other with elaborate, silly excuses.
The aroma of freshly baked cookies, a scent Jason had come to associate with a fragile truce and the burgeoning warmth of his new family, wafted through the house. It was a Saturday morning, and the usual pre-weekend calm was tinged with a nervous energy that had become their new normal. Jason, armed with a glass of milk, ambled into the kitchen, where Seraphina, Aurora, Luna, and Celeste were already engaged in a hushed, yet intensely focused, discussion.
“The PTA bake sale is tomorrow,” Seraphina stated, her voice low and precise, as if dissecting a complex theorem. “And Mrs. Gable specifically requested a contribution from ‘the new family.’” Her lips thinned almost imperceptibly. “She’s notoriously… observant.”
Aurora, ever the dramatist, dramatically fanned herself with a dishtowel. “Observant is an understatement. She has eyes in the back of her head, and probably a few strategically placed in the garden gnomes. If she sees Jason helping, or worse, interacting with us in anything other than a purely platonic, distant, ‘oh, aren’t you the neighbor’s son’ kind of way, we’re sunk.”
