The scent of rain-kissed earth always settled something in my soul, a gentle balm that eased the restless flutter in my chest. It was on such an evening, the sky a bruised twilight purple, that Ayaan and I sat on her porch, mugs of steaming chamomile warming our hands. The honeysuckle vine that tumbled over the railing released its sweet perfume, a fragrance that always felt like a sigh of contentment.

“He’s a good man, Elara,” Ayaan said, her voice soft as she stirred her tea. Her gaze drifted to the ancient oak in her yard, its branches gnarled and strong, a testament to years of weathering storms and embracing sunshine. “Omar. He’s steady. And kind.”

I traced the rim of my mug, the ceramic smooth beneath my fingertip. “He is,” I agreed, the words feeling both true and inadequate. Liam wasn’t the prince from my stories. He didn’t arrive on a white steed, nor did his eyes hold the impossible, luminous blue of the heroes in my worn-out books. His eyes were a warm, earthy brown, like fertile soil, and his hands, though gentle, were calloused from his work. He tripped over his own feet sometimes, and his laugh, while genuine, was a little too loud, a little too boisterous for the elegant salons I’d imagined.
