Ayaan’s living room was a tapestry of comfortable lived-in-ness. Sunlight, thick with dust motes dancing like tiny fairies, streamed through the lace curtains, illuminating worn velvet armchairs and stacks of books that threatened to spill onto the Persian rug. It was a space that hummed with the quiet rhythm of a life well-loved, a stark contrast to the glittering, unattainable perfection I’d conjured in my own mind. Ayaan sat opposite me, her hands cradling a steaming mug of chamomile tea, her eyes, the colour of warm earth, holding a gentle understanding that both soothed and unnerved me. Her husband, Karim, a man whose presence was as solid and reassuring as an ancient oak, was pottering in the kitchen, the clinking of dishes a soft counterpoint to our conversation.

“You’re quiet today, Elara,” Ayaan said, her voice a low murmur, like water over smooth stones.

I traced the rim of my own mug, the porcelain cool against my fingertips. “Just… thinking.”
