The air crackled with a tension so thick it felt like a physical barrier as Luca’s Blue Moon pack crested the hill overlooking the jagged border between their territories. Below, the Black Pine wolves were already assembled, a bristling mass of fur and teeth, their Alpha, Kael, a dark silhouette at their forefront. He stood with an unnerving stillness, a predator coiled and ready to strike. Lillie, standing beside Luca, felt a tremor run through her, a primal fear that warred with a growing ember of defiance. She could smell the acrid scent of Kael’s pack, a foul mingling of aggression and something else… something that made her hackles rise.
“They’re here,” Luca’s voice was a low growl, his hand resting reassuringly on her shoulder. His scent, warm and steady, was a balm against the rising tide of her anxiety. “Stay close, Lillie. Let me handle Kael.”
Lillie nodded, her eyes fixed on Kael. He hadn’t moved, but she could feel his gaze searing into her, a predatory hunger she recognized all too well. It was the same look he’d given her countless times in the Black Pine territory, a look that promised pain and degradation. But now, standing beside Luca, bathed in the protective aura of the Blue Moon pack, that look no longer held the same power.
