The air in the ancient forest was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a familiar balm to Aurelia’s senses. Yet, today, a prickle of unease threaded through the quietude, a subtle discord in the symphony of rustling leaves and chirping birds. Lord Valerius walked beside her, his usual calm demeanor laced with a vigilance that hadn't been there before. He’d been unusually quiet for the past few days, his gaze often distant, as if watching a play only he could see.

“Are we much further, Godfather?” Aurelia asked, her voice barely disturbing the hush. She’d been following his lead through the winding paths for what felt like hours, the dappled sunlight above her a constant dance of light and shadow.

Valerius turned, his dark eyes meeting hers. They held a depth that always intrigued her, a hint of sorrows and secrets too many to count. “Patience, my dear. The path is rarely straight when one seeks what has been lost.” His words, as always, were a riddle wrapped in a reassurance.
