The air, thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, clung to Aurelia like a second skin. Each breath was a conscious effort, a small victory against the gnawing fear that had become her constant companion. Beside her, Lord Valerius moved with a silent grace that belied his years, his gaze sweeping the dense forest that pressed in on either side. It had been days since they had left the quiet village, days of walking, of hushed conversations, and of Aurelia’s heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against her ribs.
“Are we close, my lord?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper, as if the trees themselves might be listening. The path ahead twisted and turned, a labyrinth of shadows and dappled sunlight, and with every step, the unspoken weight of their purpose grew heavier.
Valerius paused, his hand resting briefly on the hilt of the sword sheathed at his hip. His eyes, the colour of a stormy sea, met hers, and for a fleeting moment, she saw a flicker of something akin to sorrow, quickly masked by his usual impassive demeanor. “The road to the palace is rarely straight, child,” he replied, his voice a low murmur. “It is a path paved with both memory and anticipation. We tread carefully, for the whispers of the past have long ears, and the future guards its secrets fiercely.”
