The air in the dusty inn, thick with the scent of stale ale and woodsmoke, felt heavy with unspoken truths. My hand, still rough from the bowstring, traced the rim of my chipped wooden mug. The old traveler, Silas, his eyes like chips of ancient amber, had spoken of Zareth, of a king dethroned, and of a prince lost to the shadows. He had spoken of betrayal, a venomous serpent coiled at the heart of the kingdom. And now, here in this nameless town, far from the whispers of my dreams, a new kind of unease began to stir within me.

“You spoke of a crystal,” I prompted, my voice a low murmur against the din of the common room. “A sacred crystal that protected Zareth. What happened to it?”

Silas leaned forward, his weathered face creasing in a way that suggested a deep well of sorrow. “Ah, the Heartstone. It was the very soul of Zareth, they say. Gleaming with an inner light, pulsing with the kingdom’s strength. It was kept in the deepest chamber of the royal palace, guarded by ancient rites and the unwavering loyalty of the king’s most trusted men.” He paused, his gaze distant, lost in memories I could only guess at. “When the attack came, the Heartstone was the first thing they sought. Not for its power, not for its beauty, but to sever Zareth’s connection to its own spirit. To leave it vulnerable, broken.”
