Chapter 19

Chapter 19 — What Remains When the Tide Goes Out

In the days following the birth, Elise recovers while the lullaby's vibration stabilizes and her daughter's connection to the sea deepens. Cael, William, Mirabel, and Thornveil work to identify who dispatched Morga, narrowing their search to someone within the keepers' upper echelon who has been positioning for a conduit child for years. Veyne formally pledges herself to Elise's protection and reveals archival fragments suggesting the hidden actor has manipulated keeper proceedings before. Thornveil receives word that King Aldric is personally riding to Cairhaven. Elise experiences a vision through the mark showing her daughter as an older child walking alone on a shoreline, singing the lullaby to something vast rising from the deep—and realizes the fourth path's recognition means the danger will follow the child, not fade with the spring tide. The chapter ends with Cael intercepting a sealed communication confirming the hidden actor knows the child survived and is already moving again.

The child slept in increments measured by tide.

Elise had learned this in the first three days: her daughter's rhythms were not human rhythms, not entirely. The girl woke when the water pressed closest to shore and dozed when it pulled away, as if some interior clock were synchronized to forces that had nothing to do with sunlight or hunger or the ordinary machinery of infancy. She nursed well, cried rarely, and watched the world with eyes that hadn't yet settled on a color—shifting between slate and green and something luminous that William said reminded him of shallow water over white sand, though he said it only once because Elise looked at him in a way that made him stop talking about what the child's eyes resembled and start talking about what they actually saw.

What they saw was everything. That was Elise's private conviction, unspoken because saying it aloud would make her sound like every new mother in history and she wasn't—she couldn't afford to be—every new mother in history. This child had looked at Morga and the lullaby had sharpened to a blade. This child had looked at the Deep Old converging in the trench and translated three frequencies into harmony. This child was four days old and already conducting conversations with entities that predated human language.
