Chapter 16

Chapter 16 — The Chord Between

Halsey's advance keepers, Soren and a second keeper named Veyne, present their case for emergency custodial intervention to William and Aldric's observer Thornveil. William and Mirabel counter with legal precedent requiring crown consent. Elise experiences the chord intensifying as the third Deep Old presence settles into convergence range, and through the mark she perceives her daughter actively translating the three frequencies into harmony. Cael reveals that Halsey herself is arriving with the formal delegation within two days, not four. Elise confronts Veyne directly and demonstrates the mark's function, shaking the keeper's certainty. The chapter ends with the mark shifting—the chord stabilizing into what Mirabel identifies as the lullaby's opening phrase, and Elise sensing that her daughter's song has begun reaching beyond the Deep Old toward something older still.

The rider in the courtyard removed his traveling gloves as he crossed the flagstones, and Elise recognized the economical movement of a man accustomed to arriving in places where he was not wanted. Thornveil. Aldric's man. He walked with the careful posture of someone who had been sent to observe and report, not to intervene, and who understood that the distinction was the only thing keeping him from being turned around at the gate.

William's hand tightened on hers once—a pulse, not a grip—and then released. He turned from the window with the expression she had come to read as his council face: composed, guarded, every line of him arranged to suggest patience he did not feel.

"I'll receive Thornveil in the east hall," he said. "You should rest."
