The soft crunch of snow underfoot was a familiar, comforting sound to Pinky. It was the sound of home. Beside her, her mother’s larger paws padded with a steady rhythm, a warm presence that chased away any lingering shivers of fear or loneliness. Pinky snuggled closer to her mother’s thick, white fur, the scent of ice and her mother’s familiar warmth filling her little nose. The pink bow perched on her head felt a little bit askew, a testament to her adventure, but it didn’t bother her now. What mattered was the steady, reassuring weight of her mother’s paw resting gently on her back, guiding her, protecting her.

They had offered her food, strange little squares that smelled sweet, and they had spoken in gentle tones that didn't make her feel scared. It was a memory that was already starting to blur, like a snowflake melting on a warm tongue, but the feeling of their kindness, their quiet understanding, remained. They had seen her lost and sad, and they had helped. They had pointed her, with their strange, long arms, back in the direction her mother had been calling from.

“Mama,” Pinky mumbled, her voice still a little husky from her tears. “I was so scared.”
