Chapter 16
Guided by Kindness
The kind humans gently guide Pinky, hoping to lead her towards safety. They point in the direction of the faint scent Pinky detected.
The soft crunch of snow beneath her paws was usually a comforting sound to Pinky, a familiar rhythm to her happy life. But now, each step felt uncertain, a little bit wobbly. The pink bow perched jauntily on her head seemed to droop just a tiny bit, mirroring the worry that was starting to bubble in her tummy like fizzy lemonade. She missed Teddy. Oh, how she missed Teddy! His soft, worn fur was always the best for snuggling, and his button eyes seemed to twinkle with a special kind of understanding.
Just when a tear threatened to spill from her own big, curious eyes, a new sound reached her. It wasn’t the distant cry of a seagull or the gentle lapping of the icy water. It was a different kind of sound, a soft, melodic humming. Pinky tilted her head, her ears twitching. She peeked through a drift of snow and saw them.
Two figures, taller than any iceberg she’d ever seen, were standing near a strange, colorful structure that looked like a giant, frozen flower. They weren’t like the seals or the seabirds or even the big, lumbering walruses. Their fur was smooth and pale, and they wore coverings of vibrant hues – one bright blue, the other a cheerful red. They were the humans. Pinky had seen them before, from a safe distance, with her Mama. They always seemed so busy, moving with a purpose that was a mystery to her.
