The chill of late autumn had settled deep into the bones of the town, a prelude to the harsh winter that loomed. For Kelly, now a woman whose bright eyes held the steady gaze of experience, this familiar cold often brought with it a bittersweet ache. It was a season of reflection, a time when the ghosts of childhood, soft and warm, seemed to linger just beyond the frosted panes of her windows. Today, however, the ache was sharper, laced with a gnawing worry that had taken root in her heart like a persistent weed.

Catalina. Her Catalina, who had once been a whirlwind of golden fur and boundless energy, now lay curled on her favorite rug, a study in languid stillness. The German Shepherd, her faithful shadow through ten years of sun-drenched afternoons and whispered secrets, had changed. It had been subtle at first, a slight hesitation on the stairs, a slower greeting at the door. But now, the signs were undeniable. Catalina’s once bright coat seemed duller, her powerful frame thinner, her breathing shallow, even when she was at rest.

Kelly knelt beside her, her fingers tracing the familiar curve of Catalina’s spine. The dog’s fur felt strangely cool beneath her touch, cooler than it should be, even in the unheated room. Catalina sighed, a soft, mournful sound, and shifted her head to rest it on Kelly’s knee. Her eyes, usually so full of a vibrant intelligence, were clouded with a weariness that seemed too profound for a dog.
