Chapter 5
The Protector's Resolve
Kelly vows to safeguard her home and her ailing dog. She must become a watchful guardian, her courage and sharp mind her only weapons against the unknown threat and the deepening mystery of Catalina's illness.
The biting wind whipped strands of auburn hair across Kelly’s face, stinging her cheeks as she trudged through the deepening snow. It had been a decade since she’d last felt this particular chill, this raw, untamed cold that seemed to seep into your very bones. Ten years. A lifetime, it felt like, since she was a girl with a worn teddy bear tucked under one arm and Catalina, her magnificent German Shepherd, trotting faithfully at her side. Kelly found herself watching her, a knot of anxiety tightening in her chest with each labored breath Catalina took.
And then there were the whispers. At first, they were just hushed conversations in the market, nervous glances exchanged over flickering lamplight. Tales of a creature, a legend almost, that stalked the snow-laden landscape. The Crystal Lizard, they called it. A being of ice and shadow, capable of appearing and disappearing with unnerving randomness. Some said it was a harbinger of ill fortune, others a guardian of the frozen wastes. All agreed it was dangerous. The descriptions varied wildly – a shimmering, reptilian form, scales like shards of frozen moonlight, eyes that glowed with an internal, frigid light. But the common thread was its elusiveness, its ability to melt into the blizzard as if it were never there.
