Chapter 15
Catalina's Slow Return
Back home, Kelly notices a subtle improvement in Catalina. The dog's breathing is steadier, a faint spark returning to her eyes. The connection between the creature and her dog is undeniable.
Kelly carried Catalina inside, her heart a leaden weight in her chest. The dog was so light now, a mere shadow of the powerful companion who’d once bounded through fields with unmatched exuberance. Back in the warmth of their small cottage, Kelly settled Catalina onto her favorite worn rug by the hearth. The fire crackled, casting dancing shadows on the walls, but the usual comforting glow seemed to do little to chase away the chill that had settled deep within the German Shepherd.
Kelly knelt beside her, her fingers gently stroking Catalina’s matted fur. For days, the dog had been listless, her breaths shallow, her eyes clouded with a weariness that no amount of rest could alleviate. It was as if some vital spark had been extinguished, leaving behind a fragile shell. Yet, as Kelly watched, a flicker of something, almost imperceptible, stirred in Catalina’s deep brown eyes. A faint twitch of her ear, a soft sigh that seemed less of pain and more of… acknowledgment.
“Oh, sweet girl,” Kelly whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears. “What is happening to you?” She looked at the small, almost iridescent shard of crystal that lay nestled near Catalina’s paw, a piece she’d found clinging to the dog’s fur after their last, agonizing walk. It pulsed with a faint, internal light, a miniature echo of the larger, more terrifying phenomena that had begun to plague their isolated community. The Crystal Lizard. The name itself sent a shiver down Kelly’s spine.
