Julian tests Callie at dinner, praising her resilience to see if her innocent mask cracks. Callie matches his composure with an immensely sweet smile. Later, she picks a hidden lock on his grandfather's desk and finds Julian’s private journal from five years ago, detailing the clinical liquidation of his family's assets.

The heavy oak door of the dining room swung inward with a soft sigh, revealing a space that felt both grand and suffocating. Julian was already seated at the head of the impossibly long table, a solitary figure bathed in the warm, amber glow of the chandelier. He gestured with a graceful sweep of his hand to the chair opposite him, a silent invitation. My heart gave a little flutter, a nervous bird trapped in my chest, but I smoothed down my skirt and offered my brightest, most accommodating smile.

“Oh, Julian, it’s so lovely to have dinner together,” I chirped, my voice a little higher than usual. “I do hope I’m not intruding.”

He inclined his head, his gaze sharp and assessing, like a jeweler examining a gemstone. “Not at all, Callie. Please. I find I’ve grown quite accustomed to your presence.” He paused, letting the words settle in the air between us. “It’s… refreshing.”
