The salt spray stung Eirik’s face, a constant, invigorating reminder of the North Sea’s vastness. Days bled into one another, each sunrise painting the sky in hues of rose and gold, each sunset a fiery farewell. The rhythm of the voyage had settled into their bones: the creak of timbers, the snap of the sail, the murmur of the waves against the hull. Yet, beneath the surface, a disquiet stirred. It was a feeling Eirik couldn’t quite name, a tension that coiled tighter with every league they sailed.

He found himself watching Kaelen more often than he liked. The young warrior, already boasting a scar above his brow from some forgotten skirmish, moved with an arrogant swagger that grated on Eirik’s nerves. Kaelen’s gaze, when it landed on Eirik, was often laced with a mixture of contempt and something else… something Eirik suspected was envy. Kaelen’s skills lay in the swing of an axe and the glint of a sword, not in the patient shaping of wood or the precise heft of a hammer. He saw the longship as a vessel for plunder, for glory earned in blood, not as a testament to human ingenuity and connection.

“Still admiring the waves, Eirik?” Kaelen’s voice, rough as barnacles, cut through the drone of the wind. He lounged against the mast, his arms crossed, a smirk playing on his lips. “Or are you counting the fish, hoping for a better meal than dried fish and hard tack?”
