The salt spray lashed Eirik’s face, a constant, stinging reminder that the familiar embrace of their fjord was a distant memory. Days had bled into weeks since they’d left the jagged peaks of their homeland, the horizon a relentless, unbroken line of grey sea and sky. The longship, *Sea Serpent*, groaned and pitched beneath him, a living thing battling the relentless surge of the North Sea. He clung to the rough-hewn gunwale, his knuckles white, his stomach churning with a mixture of apprehension and a thrill he dared not fully acknowledge. This was it. The wider world.

Bjorn’s gruff voice cut through the wind’s howl. “Hold fast, lad! She’s a temperamental mistress, this sea. Show her respect, and she might let you pass.” The master shipbuilder stood near the tiller, his weathered face a mask of concentration, yet his eyes, sharp as a hawk’s, missed nothing. Eirik felt a surge of pride at the compliment, even if it was couched in a warning. He had learned from the best, and *Sea Serpent* was a testament to Bjorn’s mastery, her timbers singing a song of strength against the waves.

The first landfall was a shock to the senses. The air, thick with the scent of woodsmoke, fish, and something Eirik couldn’t quite place – a sweet, cloying perfume – assailed him as they guided the longship into a bustling harbour. It was a cacophony of sounds: the raucous cries of gulls, the shouts of merchants hawking their wares in a tongue that twisted his own, the clang of hammers from distant smithies, and the bleating of unfamiliar livestock.
