The water, usually a comforting embrace, now felt like a cold, insistent hand. Randy paddled with a frantic rhythm, his small legs churning against the current. Beside him, Elaine’s sleek, brown form was a blur of motion, her powerful hind legs propelling her forward with an agility that still amazed him. They had been fleeing the encroaching darkness for what felt like an eternity, the familiar reeds and lily pads of their home fading into a terrifying, indistinct blur behind them. The air itself seemed to grow heavier with each passing moment, thick with an oppressive silence that spoke of unseen threats.

“Are you sure this is the way, Elaine?” Randy’s voice, usually steady, trembled slightly. He risked a glance over his shoulder, half-expecting to see the swirling tendrils of shadow that had driven them from the pond.

Elaine didn’t slow, but her head turned, her dark, intelligent eyes meeting his. “The old currents don’t lie, Randy. This river has seen countless seasons, countless trials. It knows the paths that lead away from despair.” Her voice was a low rumble, laced with a weariness that mirrored his own, but also a core of unwavering resolve. She had been skeptical when Elder Maeve had spoken of his destiny, of the artifact, but the ferocity with which she’d defended their escape had erased any doubt he might have had about her loyalty.
