A Toy's True Value

The Dictator singles Jan out, seeing him as a particularly interesting new toy. Jan realizes the true horror: his own existence and the lives of his new friends are insignificant to the ruler.

The parade ground shimmered under the midday sun, a dazzling expanse of polished brass and gleaming armor. I stood shoulder to shoulder with the other recruits, my heart thrumming a frantic drum against my ribs. This was it, the culmination of everything I’d ever dreamed of. The air buzzed with the sharp commands of General Ironclad and the rhythmic crunch of boots on gravel. My uniform, stiff and new, felt like a second skin, a testament to my belonging. I was a soldier, a real soldier, in a kingdom of magic and marvels.

The Dictator, known only as the Great Toymaker, presided over the ceremonies. From his gilded balcony, a figure draped in silks that shifted like captured rainbows, he surveyed his domain. His eyes, sharp and unnervingly still, seemed to pierce through the ranks, lingering on each one of us. I’d heard stories, of course, whispers about his peculiar fascination with his subjects, how he delighted in them as if they were mere playthings. But in my youthful idealism, I’d dismissed them as exaggerations, the fearful ramblings of those who hadn’t earned his favor.

Today, however, his gaze settled on me. It wasn't a fleeting glance, but a prolonged, intense scrutiny that made the hairs on my arms prickle. He leaned forward, a slow, deliberate movement, and gestured with a hand adorned with rings that glittered like captured stars. A hush fell over the assembled soldiers. General Ironclad, his face a mask of stern obedience, barked an order, and I was directed to step forward, out of the formation.
