The Whispers of Rebellion
Jan overhears hushed conversations among the creatures. They speak of a hidden weakness, a forgotten legend, and a desperate yearning for freedom from the Dictator's grip.
The air in the barracks, usually filled with the snores of sleeping soldiers and the rustle of straw, felt different tonight. It was thick with a quiet hum, a nervous energy that prickled my skin. I lay on my cot, the rough blanket scratching my chin, and listened. Outside, the usual chirping of the night-bloomers was muted, as if even they were holding their breath.
It started with whispers. Soft, sibilant sounds that slithered through the cracks in the wooden walls, carried on the night breeze. I’d heard them before, little murmurs of discontent, but tonight they were more insistent, weaving a tapestry of hushed words. I sat up, my heart thumping a little faster. My dream of being a soldier had brought me here, to this magical world, but the reality was becoming a tangled mess of glitter and shadows.
I crept out of bed, my bare feet silent on the cool, packed earth floor. The moonlight, filtered through the high, arched windows, cast long, dancing shadows that made the familiar barracks seem strange and new. I tiptoed towards the largest window, the one that overlooked the central courtyard, where the guards usually patrolled with their clanking armor. Tonight, the courtyard was empty, save for a few sleepy glow-worms tracing lazy circles in the air.
