General Ironclad's Cold Command

Under the stern tutelage of General Ironclad, Jan learns the harsh discipline of the Dictator's army. He witnesses the unthinking obedience and lack of empathy demanded of soldiers.

General Ironclad’s boots crunched on the gravel path, each step a sharp, decisive sound that echoed in the otherwise hushed training yard. The air was thick with the scent of something like damp earth and spun sugar, a strange combination that always made my nose twitch. But today, the sweetness felt like a mockery. General Ironclad’s face was a roadmap of grim lines, his eyes like chips of polished obsidian that seemed to see right through me, cataloging every tiny imperfection. He was a mountain of a man, clad in armor that gleamed with a dull, menacing sheen, the color of a thundercloud right before it breaks.

“Soldier Jan,” his voice boomed, a sound like rocks tumbling down a cliff face, “your stance is sloppy. Your gaze is unfocused. Do you think this is a game of pretend? Do you think the Dictator’s enemies will wait for you to finish dreaming?”

He strode towards me, and I instinctively straightened, trying to remember every word of the drills. The other recruits, a motley collection of creatures I was still getting used to – furry Fuzzles with too many legs, scaled Glimmers with iridescent wings, and even a few stoic Stonefolk – stood stiffly at attention, their faces a mixture of fear and forced discipline. They had all been through this before, I could tell. Their shoulders were held tight, their eyes fixed straight ahead, avoiding any hint of individuality.
