The 'battles' Jan participates in are revealed as cruel games for the Dictator's amusement. He sees the suffering caused by this arbitrary rule, his idealism beginning to fray.

The trumpets blared, a sound I’d always imagined as a grand fanfare, a call to glory. But here, in the Kingdom of Lumina, the notes seemed to twist, sharp and discordant, like a giggle that had gone sour. We marched, my fellow recruits and I, across a parade ground paved with what looked like polished amber. The sun, a strange, pulsating orb of violet light, cast long, dancing shadows that made the rows of gleaming helmets ahead of us shimmer like a sea of fireflies. My own helmet felt heavy, the brass buttons on my tunic a little too tight, but the thrill of it all still buzzed under my skin. I was a soldier. My dream, the one I’d chased through countless imaginary skirmishes in my bedroom, was real.

General Ironclad, a creature of sharp angles and even sharper pronouncements, strode before us, his voice like grinding stones. “Recruits!” he boomed, his gaze sweeping over our eager faces. “Today, you will participate in the Grand Spectacle. The Dictator demands entertainment. You will provide it.”

Entertainment. The word hung in the air, a little out of place with the stern set of the General’s jaw. I glanced at Sparklewing, who stood near the edge of the crowd, her iridescent wings folded tightly against her back. Her usual gentle smile was absent, replaced by a worried crease between her large, luminous eyes. She gave me a tiny, almost imperceptible nod, a flicker of something that felt like encouragement, but also… apprehension.
