The polished brass buttons on my uniform gleamed, reflecting the impossibly bright sun of this strange new world. My heart swelled with a joy so pure it felt like it might float me right off the ground. I was a soldier, just like in my dreams! The training had been rigorous, yes, but General Ironclad, with his voice like grinding stones, had only made me more determined. And the creatures! They were even more wondrous than I'd imagined. Sparklewing, a sprite with wings like stained glass, had been my first friend, her laughter tinkling like tiny bells. She’d shown me the Sunlit Glade, a place bursting with flowers that sang soft melodies and trees that whispered secrets to the wind.

It started with small things. A nervous flutter when a shadow passed overhead, a hasty retreat into burrows at the sound of approaching footsteps. I’d ask Sparklewing, her tiny face creased with worry, but she’d just offer a weak smile and change the subject, her wings drooping a little. “It’s just the way things are, Jan,” she’d say, her voice losing its usual sparkle. “The Great Ruler likes things… orderly.”
